eNews Goes Red for Women—
February 1st is Go Red For Women Day
Somewhere in America a woman dies almost every minute from heart disease.

Today, the American Heart Association will be celebrating National Wear Red Day by encouraging women to wear a red dress, red dress pin, or red lipstick showing their passionate support for Go Red For Women.

Heart disease is the nation's number one killer of women and men, accounting for 36 percent of all deaths annually. Approximately 460,000 women—or almost one per minute—die from heart disease each year, and an estimated 80 million Americans have one or more types of cardiovascular disease.

Since 2004, Go Red For Women has captured the energy, passion, and intelligence of women to work collectively to wipe out heart disease. Using the simple platform "Love Your Heart," Go Red For Women engages women—and the men who love them—to embrace the cause.

Women and Cardiovascular Diseases

  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) ranks first among all disease categories in hospital discharges for women.
  • Nearly 39 percent of all female deaths in America occur from CVD, which includes coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.
  • CVD is a particularly important problem among minority women. The death rate due to CVD is substantially higher in black women than in white women.
  • In 2003, CVD claimed the lives of 483,842 females; cancer (all forms combined) 267,902.
  • In 2003, coronary heart disease claimed the lives of 233,886 females compared with 41,566 lives from breast cancer, and 67,894 from lung cancer.
  • 38 percent of women compared with 25 percent of men will die within one year after a heart attack.
  • Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability; an estimated 15 to 30 percent of stroke survivors are permanently disabled.
  • Misperceptions still exist that CVD is not a real problem for women.

February 2008 American Heart Month
Unicity International Observes American Heart Month

Learning more about living healthy should not be limited to a single month; however, Valentine decorations remind us that American Heart Month is February.

While heart attacks are portrayed dramatically in the movies as the actor clutches his chest and drops to the ground, more often the scenario is less obvious. Many heart attacks start slowly, as a mild pain or discomfort and many victims may not recognize what is happening. Symptoms may even come and go, and even those who have had a heart attack before may not recognize their symptoms, because the next attack can have entirely different ones.

According to the American Heart Association these are symptoms to take seriously:

  • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before chest discomfort.
  • Other symptoms may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.

As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Learn the signs, but remember this: Even if you're not sure it's a heart attack, have it checked out. Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives—maybe your own. Don’t wait more than five minutes to call 911.

Calling 911 is almost always the fastest way to get lifesaving treatment. Emergency medical services staff can begin treatment when they arrive—up to an hour sooner than if someone gets to the hospital by car. The staff is also trained to revive someone whose heart has stopped. Patients with chest pain who arrive by ambulance usually receive faster treatment at the hospital, too.

If you can't access the emergency medical services (EMS), have someone drive you to the hospital right away. If you're the one having symptoms, don't drive yourself, unless you have absolutely no other option.

Just a Sample of Doctor’s Testimonials on Bios Life—

“After only 2 weeks on Bios Life, my cholesterol fell from 236 to 187and my LDL fell from 181 to 138.”†
Steven Efird, M.D.

“As chief of cardiology at a major southern California medical center, I have treated just about every type of heart disease there is. Over the years I have come to realize that when I treat disease, I already lost part of the battle. So, whenever possible my primary goal is to prevent, rather than just to treat disease.

“In all my years of practice, I have never seen an all-natural product that is even remotely as effective as Bios Life for its preventive health care potential. I feel that Bios Life should be taken by everyone who has the wisdom to understand that the best way to treat disease is to prevent it.”
Gerald F. Bresnahan, M.D.

“In June my cholesterol was measured at 280 and I weighed 202 pounds. In mid-August, at the same weight and not having been on any cholesterol restricting diet, I began taking Bios Life. Four weeks from the day I began, my cholesterol level was found to be 147 (133 point drop) and my weight had decreased to 188 pounds. My weight and cholesterol have since been maintained at these levels.”
Henry Wagner, M.D.

“After 29 days of regular use of the Bios Life my total cholesterol plummeted from 242 to 169. My LDL fell from 171 to 109 and my triglycerides also had a significant reduction, falling 42 points from 162 to 120 my weight fell 9 pounds during this 29 day period. I had tried for over 11/2 years to regulate my cholesterol with diet alone, but was unable to do so.”
B.R. Haley, D.O.
